Last
week I heard about two separate suicide attempts, so I feel like it’s
an important and timely issue to address. I don’t know why these people
wanted to take their lives, but unfortunately I do know that one of the
suicide attempts was successful. Perhaps if someone had noticed a change
in these people’s moods earlier, or if the individuals had reached out
for help and support these suicide attempts could have been prevented.
I feel that we should all make sure that our friends are in a positive place. If not, we should try to talk to them about it. Of course, someone can be sad and not be contemplating suicide, but it’s still always nice to know that you’re not alone and that there’s someone interested in your feelings and your well being. So, if it does come to the point where a friend feels like death is the only answer, then he or she would know that they’re not alone and there’s someone out there willing to help them find another solution.
Our website youngwomenshealth.org has informative guides on both suicide prevention and depression. I would encourage you to look at both, especially if your mood (or a friend’s) has changed either to extremely sad or angry. Remember, there’s help out there; you just have to make the effort to look for it. For every situation, there’s a solution. Suicide is never the answer.
